Jim Russells Records (New Orleans)

Founded in 1969 by legendary Jim Russell Sr. this place breathes music history. The atmosphere is simply unique: From the moment you enter this store you are not only surrounded by tons and tons of 45s and 33s but by the feeling that every record you have ever been searching for, has resided in the densly filled racks during the last fourty years. Although many of the once housed gems have been bought up by legions of "rare-groove-diggers" that continually invaded this place (especially) in the 90ies, Jim Russell's Records is still a "must" for vinyl hunters and music-lovers: The 45 selection is incredibly extensive in quantitity and quality and the LP section holds several well-hidden "ditties".

For all collectors with a sense for musical history: Be assured, that the selection will put a smile on your face. You will rarely see as many Ray Charles LPs in one spot, get an immedate overlook of Little Richard's entire R n' B and Gospel-output or The Meter's complete Josie catalouge.

For a european white-bread like myself, the southern hospitality and relaxedness that radiated from the Jim Russell-staff provided me with the most positive case of "culture-shock" since I went to a swedish "all girls camp" in my teens.

This place is heaven!

Rooky Ricardos (San Francisco)

In the lower regions of San Francisco's famous Haight Street lies Rooky Ricardo's. Dealing in 45s mostly, this is a treasure trove for all R n'B and Soul-lovers! The staff is friendly and knowledgable, the prices are somwhere in the "mid-to high-range" (but negotiable) and the atmosphere almost "family-like".

Due to the real sweet store-design, the shop has already served as a location for TV-commercials and such. Be prepared for a serious piece of eye-candy...

Specialities: Girl Groups, R n'B and early Soul
